Design and applications of olefin metathesis catalysts. Rutheniun based olefin metathesis catalysts are starting to see use in a variety of applications. Metathesis catalysts can be used to prepare precise polymers as well as to synthesize highly functionalized bioactive agents. The key to these applications are catalysts that have the appropriate initiation rates, stabilities and selectivities. Appropriate ligand designs have allowed significant progress toward the preparation of catalysts that will promote important metathesis transformations.
